Editor’s Note:
The stories in this issue feature protagonists who find themselves at odds with the world, trying to make sense of and overcome the disfunction facing them. In nearly all, an ominous presence hovers in the background—death, an abusive husband, a distorted personality. It is not hard to see this as a reflection of the distressing times in which we live.
The poems, too, that we are presenting are equally sad, dystopian, and elegiac. And yet, it’s refreshing for us to see how these writers choose language that enlivens and cuts through to the crux of their feelings. We find in all of these moods hope, love, and survival.
As always, we are pleased to present work that displays distinct uses of diction, form, metaphor, and surprise. We celebrate the craft of writing, and in doing so, we celebrate and elevate the human spirit.
